Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon week is the largest organization prevention in our country, which usually takes place during the last full week in October. The story behind this symbol is to honor Camarena, an agent who worked for the U.S Drug Enforcement Administration. This 37 year old was sent to Mexico to investigate a major drug issue that dealt with officers from the government, polices, and Mexican Army. Sadly, a month after his visit to see his wife, his body was found in a shallow grave, where he had been tortured to death. It is said that five men approached him on February 7, 1985 and Camarena wasn’t found until then. On March of 1985, Duncan Hunter and Henry Lozano, organized Camarena Clubs in Camarena’s home town, Imperial, California . At the ceremony everyone wore red ribbons as a remembrance of Camarena and to honor his hard work by trying to make a difference in people’s lives. Until, this very day Americans all over the world celebrate Red Ribbon week to help prevent the usage of drugs and to preserve Camarena’s memory.
