Do it Yourself?

You could certainly create your own online student newspaper from scratch.

Here are some things that you will need:

  • Web Hosting with enough storage capacity and the appropriate server side software and database to enable interactivity compatible with the program(s) you either write yourself, purchase or find for free - generally a Content Management System. Commonly needed: PHP and MySQL.

  • You will probably need some programming experience - even if you purchase or use free software for your online newspaper.  Most "out-of-the-box" programs will not exactly fit the needs of a student newspaper format site.  You may need to know or learn HTML, PHP, MySQL, JavaScript and perhaps other programming languages and tools.

  • You may need to obtain a domain name.

  • You may need to interface with your IT department.

  • You will need to maintain your site (regular backups, code changes, issue archival, etc.).

  • Your annual costs (domain name, webhosting, maintenance, storage, etc.) will most likely well exceed what we charge to do it for you.

We have spent many hours researching state-of-the-art software and many more hours writing our own custom programs and web elements to make this an awesome and easy service. Moreover, we will continuously improve the service by adding new features over time and as technology changes.

We do understand, however, if you decide to go it alone.  Before you do, you should check out our extensive list of features and affordable pricing!
